By Hand Yarn News Flash March 2008

Last week’s Single Skein Social was another successful evening of eating, visiting, making new friends, and, oh yes, knitting! The most popular pattern seemed to be the felted baskets but many chose the hat or the diagonal scarf. It is always fun to sit back and watch the shop full of people knitting and talking and sharing thoughts and ideas. Our youngest knitter that night was 10 and beginning her first sweater.

Soroptomist’s are gathering hand knit/crocheted items to send to the Russian Orphan Rescue Project of Patrick Day’s. By Hand Yarn will be collecting items for this cause up until May 1st. If you have any hand knit items to donate, drop them by the store. We had a great day knitting and crocheting with them on Saturday at their Knit-In.

Plein-air Paintout – Saturday March, 8th 1:00-4:00

By Hand Yarn will be one of the sites hosting an artist this Saturday. Come see our feature artist, John Claes and see his painting of the store. Then walk around the shops of Sonora to check out the other artists too.

We are hosting the Interweave Knits Sock Trunk Show, March 17-24. It is titled “Getting Started Knitting Socks” and features 26 samples from the book of the same name. Socks are a great carry-around project, and especially good for warm weather knitting because they don’t hang down on your lap. Come check out these gorgeous examples.
By Hand Yarn is “going green”. We have made a concerted effort to bring in some new lines of eco-friendly yarn to add to our existing eco and organics. Our goal is to have a complete shelving unit of “Eco” or “Green” yarn by April 1st. As a part of sustainability, we are carrying local yarns. So far we have Mountain Lady Yarns and EvenTyrGaard Alpacas yarn. If you know someone who spins shop quantities, or you do, let us have a look. Local yarns cut down on our carbon footprint because they use less fuel for shipping. On this note, if you do not need a bag for your purchase, please let us know. Lets all do our part to save on waste.
On a personal note, have you visited our BLOG lately? It is a great way to check out what’s happening, to interact with other knitters as well as shop staff, and to make you feelings and ideas known.
March is an exciting month for us. We have new yarns coming in weekly, along with books and patterns to support them. New on the shelves right now:

Yarn:

Sublime – a dk weight 100% organic cotton, machine washable, with 120 yds per skein, in delightfully soft colors.
ShiBui – a fingering weight merino wool in glorious bright colors, machine washable, with 191 yds per skein.
Dream in Color – lace and sock weight are “in the mail” with worsted expected soon. This veil dyed yarn is truly “yummy”.
Autunno – by Dive is a wonderful worsted weight stripping merino.
We have also expanded our color choices in Lorna’s Laces, Lamb’s Pride Worsted and Bulky, and Cotton Fleece.

Books:

Guy Knits is new from the writers of Knitters magazine. It is a compilation of their most successful men’s patterns from throughout the years, including vests, sweaters, hats, mittens, and a terrific throw.
Noro Designer Mini-Knits is full of little projects – hats, mitts, scarves, etc, from Noro yarns.
The Essential Book of Crochet Techniques is a welcome addition to our ever-expanding crochet section – a great reference book for beginner to advanced crocheters.
Knitting Mittens and Gloves gives many helpful hints for those eager to improve their techniques in keeping hands warm.
Vogue Cables – Mittens, Hats, and Scarves includes more small projects, all with simple to complex cable designs.

Classes:

Check the class list for March classes. We have added “One Sock on Two Circular Needles” to the list. The class will require 300 yards of worsted weight yarn and two, 24” circular needles. It is suggested that you use addi turbos – one regular and one lace. The different color of the points will make it easier to know which point to pick up next. Other classes to note are “Knit Basics”, a great one for beginners, and “Details III”, good for the knitter who wants to know more. Classes for April will be added soon. Any suggestions? Please email us and let us know what you would like to see on the class schedule.

Thank you for shopping at By Hand Yarn,
